Short Story Submissions Now Open!

We’re happy to announce that our Fairlight Shorts program is once again open to submissions! Selected submissions will be posted to our short stories page and shared on our socials and newsletter – it’s a fantastic opportunity to get your name and work out there.
We know that each submission represents a great deal of hard work and passion, which is why at Fairlight Books we’ve pledged to consider every submission we receive. It’s important to us to give each writer a chance, regardless of whether they have an agent or not. However, it’s essential for writers, especially those inexperienced with the publication process, to remember that their submission is their chance to make a good first impression, so do be sure to read our submission guidelines and submission tips before sending your work our way.
Short story submissions must be:
- A short story, preferably no more than 5,000 words (we are happy to accept flash fiction)
- Previously unpublished
- A Word doc or PDF, sent by email
- Literary fiction – please note we do not publish children’s fiction. Find more information on what constitutes literary fiction here
- If submitting multiple works (we accept up to three at a time from the same author), ensure they are in separate documents
Please send your submissions to Submissions@FairlightBooks.com. We will be able to publish only a small number of the stories we receive, and aim to respond to submissions within three months. We don’t follow the ‘rule’ that you should only submit to one place at a time, so feel free to submit your writing widely – it stands the best chance of publication that way – but please be sure to contact us and withdraw your submission if it is accepted elsewhere.
